Original RFC follows:

Current state

IDS property IDs are natural numbers (positive counting numbers), with minimal gaps in sequence, and are relatively stable from month-to-month (ie. logical propertyID XYZ will refer to the same physical property until it is either retired, or until it is replaced; replacement however may result in another logical property with new, higher ID at the same physical address or legal parcel).

Future state

IDS property IDs will be changing to alphanumerics of a fixed-size (16 hexadecimal characters), with improved month-to-month stability over the current state (ie. with logical property IDs being generated by hashing either address and/or legal parcel data of the physical property).

Rationale

IDS is in the process of developing a new ETL system to improve our data matching, speed of algorithmic development, and data delivery to customers.

As part of preparing to switch over to the new ETL system, we are retiring our legacy property ID assignments in favour of a more stable, robust approach.

It is also anticipated that the chosen approach will be publicly disclosed at a later date, allowing clients to potentially bypass IDS search functionality in certain circumstances.

Who is impacted?

This change will impact clients who:

  • persist the propertyID after an address search (ie. in order to periodically later call the estimate or property-info APIs), or otherwise rely on the propertyID to not change

  • expect the propertyID to be a string of numeric characters, of no more than 11 in length
